-Bhutan King Jigme Singhe Wangchuk, the Chief Guest of the Republic Day Celebrations 2005, arrived in India.

2007 – Agreement for building nuclear reactors between Russia and India
2008 –
-Task force was formed in Uttar Pradesh for ‘Sanitation Policy’. Former army chief J.J. Singh was made the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh.
-A court in Afghanistan has sentenced a journalist to death sentence in the case of insulting Islam. The Pakistani army freed three areas in a fierce battle with militants near the Afghan border in southern Waziristan.
2010 – 56th National Film Awards were announced for the year 2008. Best Supporting Actor in Film, ‘Endless’, Marathi Actor Upendra Limaye was nominated for Best Actor and Actress Priyanka Chopra as Best Actress. Shibbala was selected for the Best Director Award for the Tamil film ‘Naan Kadaud’. Farhan Akhtar’s film ‘Rock On’ received the National Award for Best Hindi Film.
2011 – Bombings at Moscow’s Donodidovo airport killed 35 people, injured 180

1556 – चीन में भीषण भूकम्प में आठ लाख तीस हज़ार लोगों की मौत हुई।
1824 – रूस में पेट्रोग्राद का नाम बदलकर लेनिनग्राद कर दिया गया।
1839 – चार्ल्स डार्विन रॉयल सोसायटी के फेलो चुने गये।
1857 – कलकत्ता विश्वविद्यालय की स्थापना।
1924 – रूस के सेंट पीट्सबर्ग शहर का नाम बदलकर लेनिनग्राद किया गया।
1936 – अलबर्ट सैरुएट फ्रांस के प्रधानमंत्री बने।
1939 – चिली में भूकंप से 30 हजार लोग मरे।
1950 –
-जन गण मन को राष्ट्रगान के रूप में स्वीकार किया गया।
-डॉ. राजेंद्र प्रसाद स्वतंत्र भारत के प्रथम राष्ट्रपति बने।

1993 – सोमालिया में अमेरिकी सैनिकों के साथ संघर्ष में तीन व्यक्ति मारे गये और अनेक घायल हो गये।
1996 – सं.रा. अमेरिका के इतिहास में पहली बार देश की प्रथम महिला हिलेरी क्लिंटन को न्यायालय में पेश होने का आदेश दिया गया।
2000 – चुनावों में दलितों का आरक्षण 10 वर्ष तक बढ़ाने हेतु संविधान के 79वें संशोधन को राष्ट्रपति की मंजूरी।
2001 – जैव सुरक्षा संधि पर भारत के हस्ताक्षर, जोसेफ काबिला के राष्ट्रपति बनने पर संसद की मंजूरी।
2002 –
-संयुक्त राष्ट्र महासचिव कोफी अन्नान इस्लामाबाद पहुँचे, भारत और पाकिस्तान के बीच मध्यस्ता की पुन: पेशकश की, एनरान के अध्यक्ष केनेथ ली ने इस्तीफ़ा दिया।
-भारतीय उपग्रह इनसेट-3सी सफलतापूर्वक अपनी कक्षा में स्थापित।
2003 –
-उत्तर कोरिया और दक्षिण कोरिया परमाणु संकट के शांतिपूर्ण समाधान पर सहमत।
-भारत और फ्रांस के बीच प्रत्यर्पण संधि।
2005 –
-आंध्र प्रदेश के तेलगुदेशम के विधायक परिताला रवि की गोली मारकर हत्या करा दी गयी।
-गणतंत्र दिवस समारोह 2005 के मुख्य अतिथि भूटान नरेश जिग्मे सिंघे वांगचुक भारत पहुँचे।
2006 – कुवैत की संसद ने बीमार अमीर (शासक) को हटाया।
2007 – रूस एवं भारत के बीच एटमी रिएक्टर बनाने हेतु समझौता हुआ।
2008 –
-उत्तर प्रदेश में ‘सैनिटेशन पॉलिसी’ के लिए ‘टास्क फोर्स’ गठित हुई। पूर्व थल सेना अध्यक्ष जे.जे. सिंह को अरुणाचल प्रदेश का राज्यपाल बनाया गया।
-अफ़ग़ानिस्तान की एक अदालत ने एक पत्रकार को इस्लाम का अपमान करने के मामले में सज़ा-ए-मौत की सज़ा सुनाई। पाकिस्तानी सेना ने दक्षिणी वजीरिस्तान में अफ़ग़ान सीमा के निकट आतंकवादियों के साथ भीषण संघर्ष में तीन इलाकों को मुक्त कराया।
2010 – वर्ष 2008 के लिए 56वें राष्ट्रीय फ़िल्म पुरस्कारों की घोषणा की गई। फ़िल्म ‘अंतहीन’ को सर्वश्रेष्ठ फीचर फ़िल्म, मराठी अभिनेता उपेंद्र लिमये को सर्वश्रेष्ठ अभिनेता और अभिनेत्री प्रियंका चोपड़ा को सर्वश्रेष्ठ अभिनेत्री चुना गया। श्रीबाला को तमिल फ़िल्म ‘नान कादाउद’ के लिए सर्वश्रेष्ठ निर्देशक पुरस्कार के लिए चुना गया। फरहान अख्तर की फ़िल्म ‘रॉक ऑन’ को सर्वश्रेष्ठ हिन्दी फ़िल्म के राष्ट्रीय पुरस्कार मिला।
2011 – मॉस्को के डोनोडिडोवो हवाई अड्डे पर बम विस्फोट से 35 लोगों की मौत, 180 घायल।

24 जनवरी का दिन राष्ट्रीय बालिका दिवस के नाम से जाना जाता है। इस दिन इंदिरा गांधी पहली बार प्रधानमंत्री की कुर्सी पर बैठी थी इसलिए इस दिन को राष्ट्रीय बालिका दिवस के रूप में मनाने का निर्णय लिया गया !
